The Annex is a great place to spend the day. It’s a vibrant, busy area that’s pretty hard to pigeon-hole. It’s home to people from all walks of life, and you’re just as likely to find a struggling artist as you are to find a Bay Street banker there. If you’re planning on heading to The Annex anytime soon, here are 6 things I think you should definitely consider doing:
6. Have brunch at Grapefruit Moon.
Ok. So you’ll have to walk a bit up Bathurst for this one, but trust me; it’s worth it if you’re looking for a new weekend brunch spot. The food is great (I’d recommend the Breakfast Burrito), the staff are nice, and the place is really cozy, but get there early, or you’ll probably end up waiting in a line up.
5. Buy some books from BMV Books.
There’s no shortage of bookstores in Toronto, and that’s especially true when it comes to The Annex; but if you’re in the neighbourhood and feel like getting something new to read, then BMV Books is the biggest and best around. Here, you’ll often find a lot of the same books that a big box store like Chapter’s will sell, but at better prices. Also, they’re an independent Toronto-based bookstore, so shopping there feels good too.
4. Play a game at Snakes and Lattes.
I’ve been to Snakes and Lattes plenty of times. Besides having THE BEST name ever for a board game café (it’s so very clever), they have a great selection of new board games, games you’ve never heard of, and a bunch of the old classics you remember as a kid. This place is best visited with friends though, for obvious reasons.
3. Have a piece of cake at Future Bakery.
Future Bakery is basically a staple of the Annex, and while I’ve never had a hot meal there (I’ve heard its cheap, but not very good), I have eaten a piece of cake there; ok, more than one piece of cake. It’s only around 5 bucks for a huge slice, and there are tons and tons of great flavours and styles to choose from. Delicious.
2. Have a pint on Paupers Pub rooftop patio.
If it’s warm out, do yourself a big favour and check out the rooftop patio at Pauper’s Pub. With a fantastic view of the city, I personally think it’s one of the best places to have a pint on a Summer day in the entire city.
1. Watch a show at Lee’s Palace.
Who hasn’t been to a show at Lee’s Palace before? While it may not be the best for sound or booze selection, it’s a Toronto staple and basically a right-of-passage for anyone growing up in the city and into live music. It’s also a great place to discover new bands and new music. If you want to know what’s playing at Lee’s palace next, you can check out their upcoming shows right here.
